Every single Home speaker and Nest smart display that Google released in the last decade will support Gemini. However, Gemini Live requires newer devices and a subscription.
Gemini for Home on speakers and displays makes use of large language models to allow for more natural interactions. Commands no longer have to be phrased in a specific manner, while context is preserved during back-and-forth conversations. You can change what you’re asking mid-sentence and Gemini should understand. Besides being able to do more with your voice, commands should be more reliable.
Gemini has 10 new voice options that are more natural with realistic spacing and intonation. Overall, they are less robotic than before.
Gemini is rolling out to the following Google devices in early access at the end of October.
- Google Home (2016)
- Google Home Mini (2017)
- Google Home Max (2017)
- Nest Mini (2019)
- Nest Wifi point (2019)
- Nest Audio (2020)
- Google Home Speaker (2026) — More about that here
- Nest Hub (2018)
- Nest Hub (2019)
- Nest Hub (2nd gen, 2021)
On smart displays, there will be a new interface when you’re interacting with Gemini and Gemini Live, but the rest of the interface will remain the same.
Like on phones, you can have a more real-time conversation with Gemini Live. “Hey Google, let’s chat” brings you to this continuous conversation mode where the hotword is no longer required.
This is available on Nest Audio, Nest Hub Max, and 2nd-gen Nest Hub, as well as the upcoming Google Home Speaker. It also requires a Google Home Premium subscription.
