It was just last week when Samsung started rolling Android 16 out to the Galaxy S22 series, but apparently, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing.
After kicking off last week with a One UI 8 upgrade throughout Europe, Twitter user @Koram_Akhilesh spotted evidence that the OTA had been pulled from Samsung’s server, reverting the latest official firmware back to the most recent One UI 7 built (via SammyGuru). While this move isn’t completely out of the ordinary, it’s the first real bump in the road for what has otherwise been a pretty smooth launch for the company’s Android 16 build.
It’s unclear exactly why Samsung paused this rollout, though the Galaxy S22-specific subreddit does have a handful of posts calling out problems post-update. Still, there’s not much in the way of obvious patterns — rapid battery drain appears to be the most commonly cited issue for those with upgraded devices, but even then, it doesn’t appear to be a consistent experience. It appears the update had started rolling out in other regions outside Europe prior to this week’s pause, including in India, but the US was seemingly not among them.
Samsung has yet to make a statement on what’s happening with One UI 8 on the S22, including whether or not those devices already running the firmware will need to take action to avoid running into bugs or other issues. Android 16 is set to be the final big patch for the company’s 2022 flagship series, which was guaranteed four major OS upgrades and five years of security patches at launch.
