The current expected support period for new Android phones is around seven years, but that became commonplace after the Galaxy S20 FE was released. If Samsung holds its promise, the Galaxy S20 FE is going to officially drop from the security update list soon.
As pointed out by SamMobile, Samsung’s Galaxy S20 FE has already received its very last update, if Samsung’s end of the deal holds up. The already-released October 2025 security patch rolled out to a number of Galaxy devices, and the Galaxy S20 FE was on the list.
Technically, the device is up-to-date, but as Samsung releases more security patches going forward, the S20 FE isn’t expected to be in line. The phone will then be increasingly more susceptible to malicious attacks and security threats as they evolve, and it will not get any protection from Samsung going forward.
Samsung’s official update page lists the Galaxy S20 FE under quarterly devices, though it’ll drop soon.
The recently released Galaxy S25 FE is in year one of a seven-year software update and support plan. The phone should receive Android and security updates well into 2032. The device after the Galaxy S20 FE, the S21 FE, is not so fortunate. It also had a four-year promise stamped on it, and support for that device is coming to an end soon, too. In fact, it just got its last major Android update to Android 16.
The Fan Edition option is commonplace in every S series device from Samsung, but the Galaxy S20 FE was the first one after Samsung saw some success in the Note FE before it. It remains a part of each Galaxy S lineup, even as the Galaxy S Edge model has been pulled from future offerings. It’s a decent budget option that carries some flagship charm over to a cheaper device.
For those looking to upgrade from the Galaxy S20 FE as security support ends, the Galaxy S25 FE can be acquired for $200 off with a trade-in, plus it includes a free storage upgrade.
