YouTube is preparing to support higher-quality content, including larger video upload sizes and higher file size limits for thumbnails.

Alongside the announcement of AI-upscaled “Super Resolution” and new TV features, YouTube has also confirmed that it is “testing” support for higher video upload limits.

As it stands today, YouTube says that creators can upload videos that are 12 hours in length or 256GB in file size, whichever comes first.

The maximum file size you can upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. We’ve changed the limits on uploads in the past, so you may see older videos that are longer than 12 hours.

Apparently, that may soon change. YouTube says it is “testing larger video uploads” with “select” creators.

For the wider group of YouTube creators, though, YouTube thumbnails are getting a big upgrade. The existing 2MB file size limit is “soon” going to grow to 50MB, an absolutely massive increase. This will allow, YouTube says, for 4K-resolution thumbnails.

First impressions are everything on the big screen. Soon, we’ll expand the thumbnail file limit from 2MB to 50MB, allowing us to generate and serve new, stunning 4K-resolution thumbnails for creators’ videos. We’ve begun testing larger video uploads with select creators as well to enable even higher quality original uploads.
