Google is updating Chrome Autofill to support passport, driver’s license number, and vehicle info.
Google’s browser today can autofill addresses, passwords, and payment information. If you enable “Enhanced autofill,” Chrome will “now also fill in your passport and driver’s license number, vehicle info (like license plate or VIN) and more.” For example, when renting a car, this can fill in first/last name, driver’s license number, and state issued.
Additionally, this option allows Chrome to “better understand complex forms and varied formatting requirements.”
On the security and privacy front, Google notes how data is only saved with your permission and that it’s protected by encryption afterwards. It does involve a “page’s URL and content [being] shared with Google.” Additionally, you have to confirm before information gets filled in.
To enable (on desktop), go to Settings > Autofill and passwords > Enhanced autofill: “Chrome understands forms better and can autofill them faster for you.”
This is rolling out starting today and will be available globally in all languages. In the coming months, Google will “support even more data types.”
