Following the big Gemini updates earlier this month, Google Maps is adding a handful of new features, like review nicknames.
The AI updates continue with a prominent Gemini-powered “Know before you go” section in listings for restaurants, hotels, and concert venues. Google Maps looks through reviews and other “helpful information it finds online to surface top insights.”
Google refers to these bullet points as “insider tips,” like: the best way to book a reservation, what the secret menu items are, and parking tips. You can tap each one for more information, while a carousel at the bottom lets you access the existing “Ask a question” capability.
Know before you go is rolling out now in the US on Android and iOS.
Google Maps will now show “how many chargers will likely be available upon your arrival.” Building on real-time availability, AI is leveraged to “analyze historical and real-time charger availability to predict how many chargers are likely to be free.”
EV charger availability predictions will start rolling out next week globally on Android Auto and Android Automotive (Google built-in cars) for “hundreds of thousands of charging stations.”
Instead of using your real name, Google Maps now lets you leave reviews with a nickname and alternate profile picture that’s different from your Google Account details. Behind-the-scenes, reviews will continue to be associated with your Google Account, while existing suspicious and fake review protections remain in place.
Once available, go to your Google Maps profile page to “Edit profile.” Select the “Use a custom name & picture for posting” checkbox. Set a display name and upload a picture, or use Google’s Illustrations tool. Review nicknames are rolling out globally this month on Android, iOS, and desktop.
Google is updating the Explore tab to show “trending and popular restaurants, activities and sights near you.” These carousels show curated lists from Lonely Planet, OpenTable, Viator, and other trusted sources, as well as local influencers. This Explore update is rolling out globally on Android and iOS this month.
