After testing earlier this year, Google Messages is now rolling out a big redesign and modernization of its photo viewer.
When you select an image or video in conversations, Google Messages has a new fullscreen viewer. You see hints of other media in the thread to the left and right, with the ability to swipe.
The background is a blurred version of the current photo, which is front and center with curved corners and Nano Banana’s Remix shortcut available. Tap it to go completely fullscreen.Â
The top row notes who sent it and when, with buttons to download and delete. The three-dot overflow lets you Forward, Share, Star, and View details.Â

At the bottom, you get a row of emoji, including Photomoji. The button at the end brings up the full picker. There’s a comment count in the bottom-left corner that shows an inline view.Â
Meanwhile, back in the conversation thread, Google Messages will now group images sent at the same time for a more compact design. Initially, they are received (or sent out) one at a time. However, when you return or if the app isn’t currently open, they will be grouped.
This photo viewer redesign is widely rolling out to the stable and beta channels with the latest version of Google Messages. This has been in testing since June.

Finally, Google has also made a small tweak to the fullscreen camera where the bottom corners are rounded. This is still in the beta channel.
