Several former PhysicsWallah employees have alleged salary non-payment, inconsistent severance, and workplace mistreatment, claiming that the company failed to meet contractual obligations and terminated staff without due process. 

They said they received only a month’s salary or less upon termination, despite appointment letters guaranteeing longer notice or severance periods. Furthermore, others described sudden dismissals during the academic year, even with positive performance evaluations.

MediaNama has spoken to former employees who are pursuing legal action against the company. They allege breaches of contract, non-payment of dues, and unfair termination practices. 

Notably, the controversy emerges at a pivotal time for PhysicsWallah, which is set to become India’s first edtech company to go public. As it prepares for IPO listing, these allegations and ongoing legal challenges could raise concerns about its employment practices, compliance standards, and overall governance. Moreover, they could test investor confidence in a sector that has already faced scrutiny over profitability and workplace culture in the post-pandemic correction phase. 

The Allegations In Detail

Several former PhysicsWallah employees have alleged a pattern of inconsistent severance, delayed or withheld salaries, and abrupt terminations, suggesting deeper concerns about the company’s internal practices. A former employee named Paras Agrawal, who worked as a Doubt Expert at the company, told MediaNama that the company offered unequal severance pay, with some receiving two months’ compensation while others received only one, despite holding similar roles and tenure. 

Furthermore, others allege that the company extended their training periods beyond the agreed timelines without formal communication or additional pay, effectively delaying their confirmation and full salary entitlement.

Additionally, employees said the company often paid their monthly salaries late, and in some cases, did not pay them at all after termination. Teachers also claimed the company dismissed them mid-session, leaving students and staff without clarity.

Performance Metrics Not Counted

In one instance, Agrawal mentions an employee who had recently received a “star performer” recognition but was terminated soon after without explanation. Other employees described these dismissals as unplanned and sudden, adding that performance reviews and communication from the management lacked transparency. They were also not given any Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). 

Furthermore, he also pointed out that offer letters to educators contained a clause saying that the employee cannot leave in the middle of an academic year, nor can the company terminate a contract at this time. However, he alleges that this was not followed in several terminations.
