“The next evolution of Spotify, delivering the world’s most intelligent, agentic media platform, one that you can literally talk to, that fully understands each individual listener and puts them in the driver’s seat. It’s about moving from a passive experience to an interactive one,” said Gustav Söderström, Co-CEO of Spotify, during the company’s Q4 2025 earnings call.

He was referring to the integration of AI-agentic experiences via Sonantic, an AI voice platform the company acquired in 2022. In its investor presentation, Spotify also introduced the “Prompted Playlist” feature, available to Premium users in select markets, which allows users to generate playlists by describing what they want to hear in a prompt.

AI Agentic Music Experience

While welcoming AI-generated music on its platform, Söderström noted that both listeners and artists want to interact with their music. “Everything we see tells us listeners want to interact with their favourite music, and many artists want to let them, creating new revenue from their existing catalogue,” he added.

He further said that creators currently lack effective ways to monetise their existing catalogues through AI due to the absence of a clear rights framework. Spotify aims to address this by enabling monetisation on its platform. “We want to work with the industry to fix that,” he said.

Notably, in October 2025, Spotify also announced a collaboration with Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe to build “artist-first” AI products.

Illustrating the diversity of music tastes across cultures worldwide, and the difficulty of building a music-taste-specific dataset, he said, “You can’t just have an LLM commoditise it as a fact, the way you can commoditise Wikipedia.”

“You actually need to have many, many hundreds of millions of listeners across the world’s market constantly telling you what it means for that specific person. This is the data set we are building right now, and no one else is really building it. It doesn’t exist at this scale,” he added. 

To enable this, he said Spotify is building the following datasets on top of its existing language-to-song dataset:

  • Language-to-Music
  • Language-to-Podcast
  • Language-to-Books

On AI-Generated Music

Addressing labelling for AI-generated content, he said, “Spotify should not decide what kind of tools you’re allowed to use, whether an electric guitar, a synthesiser, a digital audio workstation, AI, or the more complicated question of how much AI: 1%, 15%, 20%, 100%? We don’t think it’s our decision to make.”

However, the company has left AI-usage disclosures to creators. “We’ve been working with the industry to allow creators and labels to upload music with metadata on how it was created, so that we can surface this to users,” the co-CEO…
