Supabase, the backend infrastructure company, said users on Reliance Jio’s JioFiber broadband in India may be unable to access its website unless they use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or change their Domain Name System (DNS) settings. In a social media post, they suggested a possible Internet Service Provider (ISP)-level block. The company said its infrastructure remains fully operational and that it has contacted Jio regarding the issue.

Supabase is a backend platform that helps developers build apps without having to create all the required server-level infrastructure from scratch. If Supabase is blocked at the ISP level, it may not just block Supabase; it may also block other services, like the apps and services that rely on Supabase.

What is the Current Status?

According to Supabase’s issue tracker page, it is still working with ISPs to resolve an issue affecting some users in India, particularly those on the JioFiber Network. Supabase said users outside India can still access affected projects, indicating that specific networks within the country are causing the disruption.

However, JioFiber users in Bengaluru told MediaNama they could access the website without restrictions. If users are unable to access the Supabase website, the company asked users to report the issue to their respective ISPs. Nonetheless, people such as @md_taqui_imam, @IndraVahan and @Jay_Borad have confirmed the issues in accessing the website.

“Our investigation has confirmed that a service provider in the region is not serving the correct DNS responses for Supabase projects from their internal DNS resolvers,” it said. This means that when users search for Supabase, the ISP’s DNS server isn’t providing the correct responses, leading to inaccessibility. For context, DNS is like a phonebook that maps IP addresses to their corresponding websites.

As a temporary workaround, in addition to VPN, the company advised users to switch to alternative DNS providers such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google Public DNS, or Quad9.

The unexplained ISP blockings in the past:

This is not the first time users in India have faced ISP-level access issues to a legitimate internet platform without a clear explanation. In October 2025, MediaNama reported that Medium.com, a long-form blogging platform, was inaccessible to some users on networks including Jio and Airtel, while remaining accessible on other ISPs and through VPN connections. Similar to Supabase, Medium had then said its infrastructure was fully operational and attributed the disruption to ISP-level blocking, which is beyond its control.
