Multiple X users reported their posts were withheld in India under Section 69A of the IT Act after blocking orders that X attributed to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in user notifications. X notifies affected users by email but gives no reason, citing “unable to provide additional information due to legal restrictions.” Users are told to email [email protected] or approach the courts to contest, without clarity on the cited grounds.

Section 69A permits blocking only for issues of sovereignty, integrity, national security, public order, foreign relations, or incitement to a cognisable offence.

This follows X Corp informing the Karnataka High Court that, between January and June 2025, it received 29,118 requests from the Indian government to remove posts, and complied with 26,641 of them—a 91.49% compliance rate.

Here are some of the posts we spotted on X between February 25 and March 10 about content removal under Section 69A:

  • Sabeer Bhatia (@sabeer), Hotmail co-founder – “Just got a notice from X. The Indian government has ordered one of my tweets blocked in India under Section 69A. No explanation provided. Apparently, Indians must be protected from my thoughts.” | Link | Also read: Full text of X’s Section 69A blocking notification — Link
  • Dr. Jwala Gurunath (@DrJwalaG) – “Bhakts abusing and trolling women is all fine, but this becomes an issue on X.” Blocked tweet: A 2022 post asking who misses Dr. Manmohan Singh as PM, noting his words about Modi are “so true”. | Link
  • Satish Acharya (@satishacharya), Cartoonist – “Two notifications in three days from X as they received ‘order’ from the govt to block two of my cartoons. My experience for the last 15 years on social media teaches me that whenever any govt/politician tries to stop a cartoon by force, that cartoon normally reaches ten times more readers!” | Link
  • Swati K. (@mynameswatik) – “I would suggest the @BJP4India to please go ahead with your arbitrary actions, and that too for this tweet. I will deal with this arbitrary misuse of power. Go ahead @PMOIndia @narendramodi! Last I checked, we still are a democratic country.” | Link
  • Bhavika Kapoor (@BhavikaKapoor5 / @BhavikaOpinion) – “Modi govt ordered to withhold my main account @BhavikaKapoor5, and now I received a second notice of withholding my alternate account @BhavikaOpinion. Why? Because the Govt of India can not digest the truth.” | Link
  • Dr. Nimo Yadav (@DrNimoYadav) – “If you write something against Modi on Twitter, that tweet is more likely to get blocked in India. Today, one of my tweets got blocked in India. Censorship is real.” | Link
  • Kapil (@kapsology) – “It seems that interns from the BJP IT Cell are sitting at MEITY and issuing orders to block accounts and posts which are slightly critical of the government. @AshwiniVaishnaw is India no more a democracy? Even a slight opposition to the government is…
