“We use JAMS to launch our first ever fully AI-generated micro-content, micro-drama that now sits on Tadka,” Ishan Chatterjee, CEO of Sports at JioStar, said on Reliance Industries Limited’s (RIL) Q1 FY2026-27 earnings call on 17 July 2026, referring to the platform’s in-house artificial intelligence (AI) content studio.

“We expect that this will allow us to launch much more high-quality content at scale across our short-form content,” he added.

The micro-drama, titled Game On: 4,000 Crore Empire, is one of two AI initiatives JioStar disclosed during the earnings call and in its investor presentation. JAMS generates video content using AI rather than through conventional filming. Separately, the company rebuilt search on JioHotstar, its streaming app, so users can find content by speaking to the app, with those queries routed to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

What is a micro-drama? A micro-drama is a short, vertical-video series consisting of 60-90 second episodes designed for mobile viewing, a format that has scaled rapidly in China and is now growing in India. JioStar’s investor presentation describes Game On: 4,000 Crore Empire as “our first in-house AI-created micro-drama.”

JioStar routes spoken search queries to OpenAI. Chatterjee said JioStar rebuilt JioHotstar’s search so users can find content by speaking requests in plain language rather than typing keywords, including in Indic languages. The app sends those voice queries to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) developed in the United States (US) that can interpret and generate human language. “This came from our deep integration with OpenAI, and specifically with ChatGPT,” Chatterjee said.

The investor presentation lists “OpenAI-powered Conversational Discovery” as a key platform initiative.

Tadka anchors the AI push. JioStar launched Tadka, its in-house micro-content hub, during the first week of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The AI micro-drama is now available on the platform. “We launched Tadka, our own in-house micro-content hub, and in the short two months since its launch in the first week of the IPL, we have seen over 100 million users engage with content on the platform,” Chatterjee said.

The products are operating at scale: According to the investor presentation:

  • JioHotstar recorded around 530 million monthly active users (MAUs) in Q1 FY27, up 15% year-on-year (YoY).
  • IPL attracted 700 million digital viewers during the tournament.
  • Tadka reached 100 million active users across more than 200 titles within two months.

The AI stack relies on foreign models: JioStar’s ChatGPT integration sits alongside other foreign-model partnerships disclosed by Reliance. Anshuman Thakur, Head of Strategy at Reliance Jio Infocomm, referred during the call to “the Gemini partnership last quarter,” referring to Google’s Gemini AI model. Jio’s draft red herring prospectus (DRHP), filed in June 2026, listed…
