It wasn’t long before Dbrand teased a new conversion kit for Valve’s upcoming console. This isn’t exactly a “skin.” It’s a full-on Steam Machine transformation into one of the most iconic game assets to grace gaming – Portal’s Companion Cube.
Dbrand is in the game of developing skins for tech. That’s a worthy umbrella term, since devices range from Android phones to consoles and PCs. The company has even dipped into handhelds within the last few years, brought on by the popularity of the Steam Deck.
With Valve’s new Steam console, the Machine, Dbrand is teasing a new product. It could be classified as a skin, but it looks more like a conversion kit than anything. The kit turns the Steam Machine into a Companion Cube from Portal and Portal 2, complete with the ridges and 3D aspects that make it look like a real-life prop.
Dbrand says it’s ‘confident it’s fully viable,” citing the hurdle of designing around the removable faceplate and air intake hardware that would need to be left unhindered with a transformation like this. Outside of those notes, Dbrand has left the project without much detail.
Users can sign up for news on the Companion Cube conversion kit for the Steam Machine via its website. The company says the skin will come in early 2026, which is around the same time that the Steam Machine is expected to launch.
