As previously reported, Amazon is now more aggressively blocking apps on Fire TV with a focus on apps that enable piracy.
Earlier this year, a report revealed that Amazon was planning a crackdown for piracy apps on Fire TV, blocking even sideloaded apps. The crackdown has now begun, as AFTVNews spotted that Fire TV now entirely blocks select apps from being opened.
The block comes from a fullscreen pop-up that appears when trying to open the app. This page used to be a simple warning, giving users the option to either uninstall the app or launch it anyway, similar to Google Chrome’s warning about insecure websites. But, now, the latter option has been replaced by “dismiss,” meaning there’s no way for the user to actually open the app.
There’s no direct workaround for this, but as AFTVNews points out, the pop-up is tied to the package name of the app. So if the package name is altered, the app can be opened. This requires modified or new versions of the app, though, so it’s not a particularly easy way to get around the new restriction.
Amazon is said to only be targeting piracy apps, but there’s no direct list of what apps are being targeted. Let us know in the comments if you’re seeing apps blocked.
