Meta has today announced that Instagram is getting a TV app designed to let you watch Reels on the big screen, but it’s only on Amazon’s Fire TV platform to start.
Instagram for TV is a new app launching on Fire TV that, as you’d probably expect, allows you to watch Reels on the big screen. The app supports multiple profiles for sign-in and lets you watch Reels with a remote-friendly UI, while also being able to search for specific content or creators.
For now, this is just a “test,” Meta says.
Today we’re excited to start testing Instagram for TV, bringing reels from your favorite creators to the big screen so you can enjoy them with friends. We’ve heard from our community that watching reels together is more fun, and this test is designed to learn which features make that experience work best on TV.
Instagram for TVs is available first in the US and only on Amazon Fire TV, with “more devices and countries” to follow in time.
The app is now available via Amazon’s website or the Appstore on Fire TV.
Amazon, commenting on the launch, says:
Our mission is to get you to the world’s best content fast, and we’re thrilled to welcome Instagram to Fire TV. We’re committed to keep pushing the boundaries of entertainment on customers’ biggest screens—the Instagram team has built an awesome experience, and we’re excited to be the first place to offer it. We can’t wait to see what customers think.
Notably, YouTube’s TV app fully supports viewing Shorts, while TikTok also offered a TV app that has since shut down.
