The Delhi Government is all set to roll out the Pink Saheli Smart Card in the New Year for women commuters travelling at no cost on buses in the national capital, as per a Times of India report.
The smart card will be mandatory for women who avail free rides on Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) buses. Importantly, girls as well as women aged 12 and above can obtain their Pink Saheli Smart Cards only after producing an Aadhaar card that carries a Delhi-based address.
While boarding DTC buses, women commuters will have to tap their smart card on the electronic ticketing machines carried by bus conductors to avail free bus rides. DTC officials told the Times of India that the Pink Saheli Smart Card scheme could be launched anytime after January 14, 2026, if everything goes as per plan.
For context, Delhi Chief Minister (CM) Rekha Gupta had made an announcement in November this year about this smart card. Gupta wrote in a post on X, saying that: “The Delhi government has launched the ‘Pink Saheli Smart Card’ for women and transgenders. Now, daughters, sisters, and mothers above 12 years of age will be able to travel free and conveniently on DTC and cluster buses.”
Importantly, this digital bus travel mechanism will replace the current paper-based pink ticket system used across DTC buses in the capital.
How Will DTC Roll Out Pink Saheli Smart Cards in Delhi?
The Delhi Transport Department has shortlisted Airtel Payments Bank as well as Muffin Payments Bank to issue these smart cards. To explain, both entities will set up dedicated counters at district magistrate (DM) offices, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) offices, bus depots, and Jan Suvidha Kendras across Delhi for distributing smart cards.
What Women Commuters In Delhi Need To Do?
Girls and women aged 12 and above who live in Delhi are eligible to avail free bus rides under this scheme. To apply, a woman must first produce her Aadhaar card carrying a Delhi-based address. Apart from this, women must also present:
- A residence proof
- An identity document, such as a PAN card or a voter ID card
- A passport-size photograph
- A mobile number, which is essential for OTP verification and subsequent registration
What Other Types Of Cards Is The DTC Rolling Out?
Apart from the Pink Saheli Smart Card for women, banks will issue smart cards meant for bus pass holders belonging to multiple special categories. These include persons with disabilities (PwD), senior citizens, sportspersons, war widows, national award winners, and over 12 other categories.
Furthermore, the DTC is also planning to introduce a third kind of general-purpose smart card. This card will function like a Metro smart card on a prepaid model and will require full KYC of the concerned person, including their name and photograph.
