The Delhi Police has stated that it has no records, information, or tender copies regarding the AI-powered smart glasses for surveillance that the Delhi police planned to deploy during the Republic Day parade on January 26, 2026, in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request filed by MediaNama.

“In this regard, no such record/information/directions/tender is available in this Unit,” said the written response to the RTI by the Public Information Officer Cum-Deputy Commissioner of Police  (Delhi)

What was the Delhi Police plan for the Republic Day Parade?

Ahead of the Republic Day parade, Delhi’s Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP), Devesh Kumar Mahala, announced at a press conference that they would deploy AI-powered smart glasses to identify “wanted individuals”, referring to probable accused, convicted criminals, or fugitives.

Without specifying which dataset they will use, Delhi police said the AI glasses would operate on a standalone system, disconnected from the internet, with databases deployed as ZIP files on individual mobile phones linked to the wearable devices.

“We have fed different algorithms into the database of these standalone systems. If wanted individuals are detected or spotted, even if they are wearing makeup, a mask, a cap, or have a beard, our algorithm will identify them,” ACP, Devesh Kumar Mahala had said at the press conference.

The Delhi Police did not disclose which specific datasets they used to train the facial recognition algorithms, how they would secure the databases deployed on individual devices, what accuracy rates the system achieved in real-world testing, or what due process they would follow in cases of false identification.

It is important to note that, apart from the press conference by Delhi Police before the parade on January 22, no additional information is available in the public domain confirming that this was deployed during the Republic Day parade or that it caught any suspects.

Who developed these glasses?

The AI-powered smart glasses were reportedly developed by Ajna Tech, a Maharashtra-based company founded in 2014. According to Ajna Lens’ website, the company claims that the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Aeronautical Development Agency trust its services.

It has investments from IDBI-owned Maharashtra Defence and Aerospace Venture Fund. Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma and Lenskart as well.
