Deepinder Goyal-backed aviation startup LAT Aerospace has acquired Gurugram-based early-stage defence robotics startup Sharang Shakti. This marks its official entry into the defence-tech space. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
In a social media post on X, Goyal said the acquisition marks the company’s first step toward building indigenous defence capabilities and aligns with its long-term vision to develop next-generation civil aviation platforms in India.
“By bringing Sharang Shakti into LAT, we are building these capabilities in-house, from first principles, with the intent to deploy them across both defence and civil programs over time,” the post read.
The announcement comes a month after Goyal resigned as Group CEO at Eternal in January this year. At the time, the Zomato founder said he wanted to pursue certain high-risk ventures that fell outside the strategic scope of the foodtech company.
In addition to LAT Aerospace, Goyal has invested $25 million in Continue Research, a longevity-focused venture. He is also said to be contemplating launching a wearable device company named Temple. Devices launched under this brand are expected to track cerebral blood flow.
Sharang Shakti’s Product Stack
Founded in 2023, Sharang Shakti is building critical defence technologies for airspace surveillance and airborne threat mitigation.
Sharang Shakti’s key products include:
- vajR Hangar: An interceptor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that leverages machine learning to track rogue drones and is designed to physically neutralise them in a hard-kill style.
- hantR: A UAV capable of short-range airborne threat detection, tracking, and capturing threats such as drones using onboard sensors and a net-launching mechanism.
- Drone Detection Radar: The company is also building a low C-SWaP (size, weight, and power) early-warning radar system for micro-drone detection.
LAT Aerospace’s Goal
In his X post, Goyal noted that India’s civil aviation and defence sectors are often seen as separate. However, the technologies used, such as autonomy, sensing, and control systems, overlap significantly. He added that, “slowly but surely,” LAT Aerospace aims to build in-house capabilities to deploy products across both defence and civil programs over time.
