Spotify has discontinued its Premium Lite subscription in India six months after launching the plan, while cutting prices for its Standard and Student tiers to expand its paid subscriber base in one of its biggest markets.

The music streaming company confirmed the move on Wednesday. “We occasionally adapt the plans we offer, based on market opportunity and to provide users with choice and value. In India, the Lite plan is no longer available,” a Spotify spokesperson told Moneycontrol.

Spotify has removed the Lite plan from both the website and the mobile app. The company has not clarified what will happen to existing Lite subscribers.

Standard and Student Plans Become Cheaper: At the same time, Spotify has reduced the monthly price of its Premium Standard plan from Rs. 199 to Rs. 139, making it the cheapest available premium tier in India. The Student plan has also become cheaper, dropping from Rs. 99 to Rs. 69 per month. The company has not changed the benefits included in these plans.

The Standard and Student plans continue to offer ad-free music streaming, offline downloads, and audio streaming quality of up to 320 kbps. Spotify’s Premium Platinum plan, priced at Rs. 299 per month, remains unchanged and includes features such as lossless audio and AI-powered tools.

Lite Plan Was Introduced Last Year: Spotify introduced the Lite, Standard, and Platinum tiers in India in November 2025 as part of a broader overhaul of its subscription model. The Lite plan was positioned as a lower-cost option with ad-free streaming and audio quality limited to 160 kbps, but without several premium features available in higher tiers.

At the time, Spotify also discontinued its older Duo and Family plans for new subscribers in these markets and shifted users toward the new tiered structure.

Spotify Expands Platform Controls and AI Verification Tools: The pricing changes were announced on the same day Spotify said it was expanding “managed accounts” for users under 13 to its free tier in select global markets. The feature gives parents more control over what children can access on the platform, including filters for explicit content and restrictions on videos and social features. India was not part of the latest rollout. 

The company has introduced broader platform changes in recent months amid the rise of AI-generated content in music streaming. Earlier this month, Spotify announced a new “Verified by Spotify” label to distinguish human artists from AI-generated profiles. 

The latest pricing changes suggest Spotify is simplifying its subscription lineup while making its main premium offering more affordable in India. The company sees long-term growth potential in the country due to its large digital user base.
