On June 25, NITI Aayog reportedly held a meeting in which representatives from major tech intermediaries and several industry bodies participated in a closed-door discussion on India’s current online content-blocking requirements and transparency timelines, according to a report by The Indian Express’s Soumyarendra Barik.

Among the questions NITI Aayog reportedly asked during the discussion were:

  • “Are current takedown, grievance, and transparency timelines operationally feasible across different categories and sizes of intermediaries?”
  • “Which intermediary due diligence obligations impose the highest recurring compliance burden, and what specific operational simplifications would be most impactful?”

Representatives from the following intermediaries reportedly participated:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • YouTube

Industry bodies that were part of the discussion included:

  • Nasscom
  • Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
  • Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)
  • Broadband India Forum (BIF), among others

The government’s top public policy think tank also sought views on a wide range of regulatory issues, including laws affecting social media companies and other online intermediaries, cybersecurity, data protection, and online gaming, The Indian Express reported.

The discussions are reportedly taking place under NITI Aayog’s new “Jan Vishwas Siddhant” initiative, which may be linked to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s proposed Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026. The Bill aims to amend 80 central Acts to decriminalise or rationalise offences and penalties. Read more about it here.

Based on these consultations, NITI Aayog may submit a report to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
