Adobe and WhatsApp have launched an integration that allows users to open, view, and annotate PDF files directly within WhatsApp Web and the Windows desktop app. This eliminates the need to download documents before reviewing or editing them. The feature is available globally, but its rollout is phased, so some users may not see it immediately.
What’s new? When a PDF is shared in a WhatsApp Web or Windows desktop chat, it now opens in-line, allowing recipients to scroll through pages and zoom in without leaving the conversation. Built-in Acrobat tools let users highlight text, cross out lines, and draw annotations directly on the page before sending feedback through the chat.
Password-protected PDFs are also supported. Recipients are prompted to enter the password before opening the file. Files shared in this way remain protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, so access is limited to chat participants.
What it does not do? The integration does not support full document editing. Users can review, comment on, and annotate files, but they cannot modify the original text or change the page layout within WhatsApp. To access these features, users can select the “Edit in Acrobat” option, which opens the file in the full Acrobat web app. There, users can format text, add content, reorder or extract pages, apply passwords, and prepare files for e-signature.
Viewing PDFs and using basic annotation tools is free. Advanced editing tools and Acrobat’s AI Assistant, which can summarise documents and answer questions about their contents, require a paid Acrobat subscription. Users without a subscription are prompted to sign in or upgrade when attempting to access these features.
Part of a wider Adobe push to embed itself everywhere: The WhatsApp integration is Adobe’s latest effort to embed Acrobat and other apps within platforms users already rely on, eliminating the need to open Adobe’s standalone software. Acrobat tools are now available as browser extensions for Chrome and Microsoft Edge, integrated into Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Teams, Outlook, and OneDrive, and incorporated into Workday’s HR and finance workflows for document routing and e-signature.
Adobe has also recently expanded into AI chat interfaces. In December 2025, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Adobe Express were integrated with ChatGPT, allowing users to edit images, modify and merge PDFs, and generate designs using conversational commands. Users can also transfer projects to the full Adobe app for advanced editing. In March 2026, Adobe introduced Express and Acrobat to Microsoft 365 Copilot via the Copilot Agent Store, making these document and design tools available in Copilot Chat and Teams for enterprise users.
