Samsung usually celebrates Earth Day by offering its previous generations of flagship smartphones through its “Certified Re-Newed” refurbishment program, just as it did this year with the Galaxy S24. In a first for the company, though, Samsung’s also offering refurbished foldables through this same program, though you’ll still need some serious cash to pick one up.
Beginning today, Samsung now offers “Re-Newed” Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 devices on sale through its online store, at a reduced cost over its most recent slate of foldables. It’s a little out of left field for the company, and not just because it’s bucked the usual Earth Day announcement in lieu for a late summer press release. Samsung is also holding off on offering last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, presumably either to steer buyers towards the sleeker Fold 7 or because the current costs to repair and refurbish the device is higher than the market would allow.
For those unfamiliar, the “Certified Re-Newed” program sells devices “serviced by Samsung specialists and repaired with 100% Samsung genuine parts, including a certified new battery.” Devices sold through this program also include a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, along with the option to upgrade to one of the brand’s Care+ plans for additional protection.
If you can live with the bulkier hardware and awkwardly-shaped front display, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 might be a solid pick. While last year’s Z Fold 6 did plenty to modernize the series — bringing along a flatter design and an improved cover screen — there’s still plenty to like about its predecessor, including a perfectly solid Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It also has three years of security updates left on its five-year guarantee before eventually being put out to pasture, though that’s a far cry from Samsung’s current seven-year policy.
It also won’t come cheap. Samsung’s offering the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in just one color — Phantom Black — and two storage configurations. The 256GB model will run you $1,169, while the 512GB model costs $1,219. You can take advantage of trade-in offers to bring that price down, though unless you have a recent flagship like an iPhone 16 Pro Max or an S24 Ultra, you’re unlikely to get more than a few hundred dollars at most off your final purchase price.
Between the two devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is probably the better deal. Its successor was fairly similar in terms of both design and raw horsepower, so as long as you’re fine with trading away a couple of additional years of security patches to save some cash, you’re looking at a pretty solid phone — even in 2025. Like the Fold, Re-Newed Flip 5s only come in Graphite. The 256GB model will run you $650, while the 512GB model is $700.
Today’s news is a bit of a mixed bag of deals, especially if you’re willing to venture outside the Galaxy ecosystem….
