After previously being limited to Cameras and Automations, the Google Home web app now lets you control other smart “Devices.”
This new tab in the navigation rail was previewed in June. Visually, it looks like the tablet app with a feed at the right showing your devices organized by room (alphabetical). The left sidebar lets you quickly scroll to a specific grouping.
The grid of tiles works exactly like on mobile, with a tap turning a device on/off. In the case of lights, you can adjust the brightness by dragging, but there’s no color picker. Nest Thermostats have a plus/minus for temperature control, while the overflow menu lets you select: Heat, Cool, Heat ᐧ Cool, and Off. Smart locks are also present, while plugs are a simple on/off.
Controls for this device are not yet supported
Media devices (speakers, displays, and Chromecasts) might appear in the grid, but they cannot be controlled. Meanwhile, the camera control is straightforward.
Once available, there’s a “Google Home for web is getting better” prompt. Google explains how “some features may be limited,” and how “More device types and controls are coming soon.”
Rolling out over the past few days, we’re seeing expanded device controls in the Google Home web app with the Public Preview program. Try it out at home.google.com.
