In addition to safety features for Android’s Messages app, Google is introducing new Account recovery tools today, like establishing trusted contacts.

The aim today is to “help eligible personal account holders quickly and securely regain access with less frustration.”

You will be able to designate Recovery Contacts, like trusted family members or friends, to help regain your Google Account. They can help “if you’re locked out due to a forgotten password, lost passkey device, or account compromise.” Recovery Contacts “help verify your identity, providing a simple and secure way to regain access when standard recovery methods fail.”

To set, go to myaccount.google.com > Security, which Google says has been “redesigned to make managing your personal information easier.” This Recovery Contacts feature is available for eligible personal Google Accounts.

Meanwhile, Android users trying to recover their account will benefit from a “Sign in with Mobile Number” feature. This is aimed at when phones are stolen, lost, or broken.

Google “automatically identifies your accounts using your phone number” with the only verification needed being the lockscreen passcode from that previous device. No password is required, with this feature rolling out gradually for users worldwide.

More broadly, Google notes how “people are routinely encountering elaborate phishing attempts that use techniques like voice cloning, deepfakes and social engineering for convincing impersonations.” For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Google Stores in New York City (October 21) and Mountain View (October 28) are hosting in-person scam and fraud workshops for seniors.
