Fantasy gaming platform Dream11 announced that it was shutting pay to play operations on its website, in line with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. However, there is still no clarity regarding how users can withdraw their funds from the platform.
MediaNama tested out the platform and was able to place a bet of Rs. 49 on a cricket match between Australia and South Africa. And as of 11:00 AM on August 22, Dream11 was still offering the bets service on its platform. Notably, the app did not provide any information to users on how they could withdraw their deposits.
According to the Dream11 app, there were almost 2.8 million users who had placed bets on the match.
Further contests were marked as “Free to Play”, as the app has apparently stopped accepting any new monetary deposits at the time of publication.
Notably, a screenshot purportedly from Dream11 has been circulating on WhatsApp, stating that the fantasy sports platform is pausing all “Pay to Play” fantasy sports contests. It also informs users that their balance is safe and available to be withdrawn from the Dream11 app.
This is apparently in line with other online money gaming apps like MPL, PokerBaazi and Probo, which also assured users that they could withdraw their money.
However, when Medianama accessed the app, it did not offer any such notice.
As per a report from Entrackr, Dream11 was shutting down its RMG segment, which contributed two-thirds of the business’s total annual revenue. The fantasy sports app will instead be focusing on its other business like Fancode and Sportz Drip, which are not related to RMG, as well as their investments in Cricbuzz and Willow TV. The Dream11 shutdown will potentially lead to cost-cutting measures like mass layoffs.
Furthermore, opinion trading app Probo is also shutting its doors as per a statement from the company.
“As unfortunate as it is, we respect the government of India’s latest Online Gaming bill. In light of this development, Probo has decided to discontinue its real-money gaming (RMG) operations with immediate effect until further notice. We remain steadfast in our vision to innovate and build information markets from India, for the world,” said Probo.
