This is a final call to register for MediaNama’s briefing call on “Understanding Nepal’s Social Media Ban,” happening tomorrow, Friday, September 12, from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM IST on Zoom.
The recent social media ban in Nepal has become a pivotal event, sparking widespread anti-corruption protests and leading to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The provisions that led to this ban are being formalised in a new Social Media Bill tabled in Nepal’s Parliament earlier this year.
The proposed legislation requires social media platforms to obtain and renew a government license to operate. It also mandates the verification of every user’s real identity. Additionally, the government is empowered to order the removal of content for vague reasons such as “social disharmony” or “sovereignty,” enabling censorship. The bill further requires companies to appoint local representatives and establish a complaint redressal mechanism. In doing so, it may eliminates safe harbor protections and imposes penalties or bans on platforms that fail to host only legal content, register and renew licenses, and verify user identities.
To discuss the impact of this bill on social media in Nepal, MediaNama invites you to join a discussion on “Understanding Nepal’s Social Media Ban.”

In this MediaNama Briefing, we will delve into why the social media ban happened in Nepal, as well as understand the bill permanently formalising the provisions that can lead to such bans and major restrictions on social media in the country in the future.
