In a rare outage, Google Maps is down and will not load as of 1 p.m. PT on Thursday. This is impacting the Android and iOS apps.
The map layer itself — regardless of location — is not properly loading, with rough outlines appearing instead. In (local) areas where the map is cached, places/listings do not appear. This in turn impacts navigation/directions.
Users around the world are reporting issues. The Google Maps website is not impacted.
There are currently no incident reports for Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, etc.), YouTube, Search, Gemini, or other Google apps, though NotebookLM reported some issues at around 12:30 p.m.
Update: As of 1:30 p.m., Google Maps is back on Android devices that previously had the loading problems depicted below.
We’re still seeing issues on iOS as of 1:45 p.m. with a “Can’t reach the internet” error when looking for directions, while search is entirely down. Bizarrely, the iPhone app is missing its bottom bar. Try maps.google.com in your browser as a workaround.
Update 2: As of around 3 p.m., Google Maps for iOS looks to be back.
