Foodtech major Swiggy has launched a new budget food delivery app called toing, promising meals priced under Rs. 250. First reported by Inc42 and confirmed by MediaNama through direct access to the app, toing is currently live in select areas of Pune and has crossed 500 downloads on the Google Play Store since its launch on August 30.

The app positions itself as a pocket-friendly alternative to Swiggy’s main platform, with menus built around categories like “meals under Rs. 99” and staples such as poha, khichdi, dosa, and paratha. Swiggy has set the platform fee at Rs. 12 per order on toing, compared to Rs. 15 on its flagship app.

The Price Paradox on Toing and Swiggy

MediaNama’s review shows that toing’s affordability pitch does not always hold true. For example, in one order placed on toing, a basket priced at Rs. 247 ended up at Rs. 271 after adding a Rs. 12 platform fee and Rs. 12.35 in GST.

Furthermore, we also checked the same order on both apps, and the results were stark. On toing, a Chicken Biryani Bowl and Falafel Nuggets cost Rs. 346, while on the main Swiggy app the same items cost Rs. 486. The gap came from extra surcharges on the Swiggy app, including Rs. 25 for packaging, Rs. 25 as a “rain fee”, higher GST, and a Rs. 15 platform fee. By contrast, toing stripped away packaging and weather charges, which helped it appear more budget-friendly.

Toing charges breakdown: Rs. 15.90 in GST and Rs. 12 platform fee, with packaging charges waived. Final bill Rs. 346.

Swiggy app order of the same items from The Good Bowl (Chicken Biryani Bowl and Falafel Nuggets) priced at Rs. 368 before fees.
Swiggy charges breakdown: Rs. 20.15 GST, Rs. 14.99 platform fee, Rs. 25 packaging charge, and Rs. 25 “rain fee.” Final bill Rs. 486.

Platform Fee Experiment of Swiggy

The screenshots underline how Swiggy is experimenting with platform charges across its apps. On toing, the fee is capped at Rs. 12, while the Swiggy app charges Rs. 15. This difference comes against the backdrop of repeated hikes. In September, Swiggy raised its fee to Rs. 15, up from Rs. 14 in August. Meanwhile, Zomato also increased its platform fee to Rs. 12.5 per order.

Moreover, platform fees, which began as a Rs. 2 charge in 2023, now bring in significant revenue. In Q1 FY26, Zomato generated Rs. 89 crore from platform fees, while Swiggy netted Rs. 109 crore from “additional fees from customers” across its food delivery and quick commerce segments.
