Confirmation that the world has gone mad: I got into my car, a Smart #1, on Saturday, and before it did anything else, the car said “Love is in the air” and wished me a happy Valentine’s Day. As a matter of principle, I refused to speak to it for the rest of the day.

I tried to avoid saying thank you for a whole day and ended up feeling miserable and ungrateful (The hill I will die on: Britons love saying thank you – I think we should ban the phrase, 7 February). I feel much better now that I have gone back to saying it whenever I feel grateful for something someone has done.

More bedtime stories (Letters, 13 February) brought to mind our holiday in Oban, Scotland. When we entered our hotel room, there appeared to be a pregnant lady in our beds. On closer examination, it turned out to be a large wire cage with an infrared lightbulb in the centre that could be turned on to preheat the bed. There was also a sign forbidding sleeping with the device.

In response to Manju Ghosh’s question on where to get £2 coins (Letters, 10 February), may I suggest the Big Issue seller near the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, London. I got a £2 coin in change last Saturday – the first I had seen for many a month.
