Union Health Minister JP Nadda launched Aarogya Setu 2.0 on June 29, 2026. The application was originally developed for COVID-19 contact tracing and was subsequently handed over to the National Health Authority (NHA) by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Repurposed under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), the 2.0 app aims to function as an AI-enabled Personal Health Record (PHR) management platform and a centralized application for digital health-related services in India.
Arogya setu 2.0 will use Google’s Gemma AI model: According to Google, the application integrates two major AI technologies:
- Gemma 4: Google claims that Gemma 4 is its most intelligent open model, launched in April 2026.
- Google’s open-source Medical Data Toolkit. “Medical Data Toolkit converts unstructured medical documents (PDFs, images, screenshots) into accurately structured electronic medical data in the HL7® FHIR® standard format. The toolkit accomplishes this through the use of an LLM model (external to the tool), specialized document schemas, and advanced extraction pipelines,” reads its description on GitHub. The app is expected to convert unstructured medical documents and images into standardized health data using Gemma 4 and the Medical Data Toolkit. Read more about the toolkit here.
