Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos, and business information to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT access to real-time local recommendation data, Axios reported.

ChatGPT gains Yelp content. ChatGPT will be able to include Yelp reviews, ratings, photos, and business details in responses to local queries. Yelp branding and links will appear when OpenAI uses its content, although OpenAI controls how that experience is presented, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman told Axios.

Yelp expands into ChatGPT. Yelp sees value in distributing its content beyond its own properties when it benefits consumers, Stoppelman said. The OpenAI partnership adds ChatGPT to Yelp’s distribution network, with Yelp branding and links accompanying its content.

  • Yelp already licenses data to platforms including Yahoo+ and Apple Maps.
  • The agreement doesn’t prevent Yelp from licensing its data to other AI companies.
  • Financial terms were not disclosed.

Quote requests are coming. Yelp’s Request a Quote feature will also be available in ChatGPT local services searches, Axios reported. This feature will let users contact local service providers for quotes (e.g., requesting consultations, scheduling appointments) directly through ChatGPT.

Why we care. ChatGPT is becoming another place where people can find local businesses, read reviews, and take action. Yelp’s deal with OpenAI also means third-party data will play a bigger role in how AI platforms answer local queries, since local prompts/queries have been a weakness for ChatGPT.

Trust remains a challenge. Sixty-five percent of Americans have used AI search, but only 15% trust it “a lot,” according to Morning Consult research. The survey also found that 72% believe AI platforms should always identify their information sources.

Yelp’s history with Google. Yelp previously licensed content to Google before the relationship deteriorated into years of conflict over Google’s local search practices. Yelp is now suing Google, alleging the company unfairly favored its own local search results.
