A day after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Education Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the formation of a “high-powered task force”, headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. The panel will suggest reforms for conducting competitive exams fairly by government bodies.
What PM Modi said: “Friends, for the future of students, the government of India is continuously taking several steps. Those who played with the future of students are rotting in jails. We have established fast-track courts; in Parliament too, tomorrow we are moving towards making a new law with tough provisions. But we have to think of the future. That our education system becomes reliable, transparent and uses technology to the maximum,” the PM said in a post on Instagram.
“Keeping all these things in mind, it has been decided to create a high-powered task force under world-renowned technology expert Shri Nandan Nilekani, which will focus on examination reform; on the basis of its report, the work of making our examination system more dependable will be done as soon as possible,” PM Modi added.
Who else will be on the task force? Besides Nilekani, the task force comprises:
- S Somanath, former chairman of ISRO
- Tapan Deka, former director of the Intelligence Bureau
- V Kamakoti, director of IIT Chennai
- Anita Karwal, former education secretary
- Amrit Lal Meena, a retired Bihar-cadre IAS officer, as logistics expert.
What will the task force do? The task force has been constituted to revamp the National Test Agency, which is responsible for conducting national-level competitive exams in India. Last month, a Dubai-based researcher exposed vulnerabilities in NTA’s re-examination portal. In May, a 19-year-old cybersecurity researcher publicly exposed the security vulnerabilities of the CBSE On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
The panel will recommend measures to strengthen the NTA’s technological capabilities and propose structural reforms to the examination system.
Nilekani’s involvement in other government initiatives: After his exit as CEO of Infosys in 2009, Nilekani took charge as founding chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Aadhaar was his brainchild.
- Nilekani also served as an advisor to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) during the development of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
- He headed a five-member panel that the Reserve Bank of India set up in 2019 to grow the acceptance of UPI across the country.
- In January 2023, Nilekani was appointed as the co-chair of the G20 Task Force on Digital Public Infrastructure for Economic Transformation, Financial Inclusion, and Development.
- In 2025, the Supreme Court’s AI Committee, instituted to aid the judiciary’s adoption of AI, also appointed him as an expert.
