Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) has identified rules restricting children’s social media use as a business risk in its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP), filed with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on June 19, 2026.

In its risk factors, JPL says ‘any regulatory developments that restrict or limit the use of social media, including by minors or involving the online gaming industry’ could cut customers’ data consumption and hurt its revenue.

The restrictions in play

The revenue picture is not one-sided: Jio frames these restrictions purely as a loss; less social media use means less data sold. But if age verification runs through the telecom layer, operators also stand to earn from it. At a MediaNama roundtable on age verification in Bengaluru on May 15, 2026, held under the Chatham House Rule, MediaNama editor Nikhil Pahwa noted that operators earn a fee for each check they run: “Telecom operators get more money when they do verification; they get money for every verification they do,” he said.

The same rules it lists as a revenue risk could also provide it with a verification revenue stream if the system routes those checks through the network. Pahwa also cautioned that telecom-based verification fails in practice: “Children don’t necessarily have their own SIM card. There is multi-SIM and multi-account usage, so you can’t use mobile numbers anyway,” he said.

Jio’s filing tells investors these rules could cost it money. It does not mention that the same rules could be used to enforce them, a gap that matters as the Centre and states draft the framework.
