Is the hotspot clause on Airtel’s website? The disputed line reads, “Sharing of Data where the customer has activated the Unlimited 5G Data shall not be allowed via mobile hotspots.” Its wording appears in viral screenshots that spread on X (formerly Twitter) from 16 July 2026. Free Press Journal reported on 18 July that Google’s snippet for Airtel’s “Terms and Conditions – Unlimited 5G Data offer” page carried the clause, but that clicking through redirected to a general terms page that did not contain it.
On 20 July, that snippet no longer showed the clause. A search for the same page returned Airtel’s general terms page, whose snippet described “prepaid & postpaid plans, recharge rules, data usage limits and billing policies” with no mention of hotspots. The shift suggests the clause may have been removed from the page and Google subsequently re-crawled it, though MediaNama could not access the offer page directly to confirm.

What do Airtel’s postpaid terms say? The postpaid terms page reads:
- “It is clarified and stated that these offers are only meant for personal and non-commercial use, and are not intended for any commercial use, or special or enterprise plans.”
- “Airtel reserves the right to end/suspend/modify the Offer/services/implement throttle speeds in specific cases of commercial use, or any fraudulent use.”
- “Commercial usage is considered where data usage is beyond 300 GB in every bill cycle.”
Neither the 300GB threshold nor any hotspot restriction appears on Airtel’s recharge page at the point of sale. The benefits panel for the Rs 3,599 plan lists “Unlimited 5G + 2GB/day” and states that customers can use the unlimited 5G benefit “over and above your plan limit… in 5G Network areas only.” It shows no cap or hotspot condition.
Why does the 300GB cap exist? Airtel first defined the cap after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) asked it to make the unlimited plan’s terms clearer, following a Vodafone Idea complaint against it and Reliance Jio over alleged predatory pricing.
