At a time when Flipkart is under intense pressure to attain profitability ahead of its initial public offering (IPO) in 2026, its core marketplace entity, Flipkart Internet, and in-house logistics arm, eKart, have reported a 37% and 12% year-on-year (YoY) decline in their net losses, respectively, for the year ended March 2025.
Financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) show that Flipkart Internet, which runs the core e-commerce marketplace, saw its revenue from operations jump 14% to Rs 20,493.3 crore in Financial Year (FY)25, compared to Rs 17,907.3 crore in the preceding financial year.
More importantly, the marketplace entity of Walmart-owned Flipkart was able to trim its losses by 37% to Rs 1,494.2 crore during the year under review, from a Rs 2,358.7 crore loss in FY24. The revenue growth, however, was lower than the 21% jump recorded a year earlier, reflecting a broader slowdown in online consumer spending.
Flipkart Internet generates revenue primarily by charging sellers commissions on sales, offering advertisement opportunities, and providing value-added services to support their businesses.
During FY25, Flipkart Internet’s total expenses went up 8% to Rs 22,310.7 crore from Rs 20,627.4 crore in the previous year.
In comparison, Amazon Seller Services, the entity that operates the Amazon marketplace in India, narrowed its standalone net loss by over 89% YoY to Rs 374.3 crore in FY25. Meanwhile, revenue from operations surged nearly 19% to Rs 30,138.6 crore in FY25, from Rs 25,406 crore a year ago.
According to a 2024 AllianceBernstein report, Flipkart led the e-commerce space in India with a 48% market share as of FY23, with mobile and apparel being its largest categories, contributing 50% and 30% to its mix, respectively.
Flipkart’s Logistics Arm Trims FY25 Loss to Rs 1,500 Crore
eKart, the in-house logistics unit of Flipkart, managed to reduce its net loss by 12% YoY to Rs 1,508.4 crore on a standalone basis in the financial year ended March 2025. The company had incurred a net loss of Rs 1,718.4 crore in the preceding financial year, as per regulatory filings.
Revenue from operations increased over 13% to Rs 13,732.9 crore in FY25 from Rs 12,115.3 crore in FY24. The primary business activity of the company is logistics, warehousing, and courier and allied services. Logistics services accounted for 77% of the total revenue from operations for FY25, while collection and warehousing services contributed 12% and 11%, respectively.
It is worth noting that Flipkart bought back its logistics arm, eKart, in 2015 from WS Retail Services. In 2016, eKart was spun off as a separate entity under the name Instakart Services Private Limited to support fulfillment services for Flipkart and Myntra. Besides, eKart also caters to direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, online sellers, and retailers.
