The Delhi government is planning to launch a cooperative ride-hailing service within the city, according to a Times of India report.
The move aims to provide passengers with affordable travel options without the surge pricing phenomenon in Delhi, while also offering drivers the prospect of zero commission charges on their earnings.
Delhi’s Cooperative Minister, Ravinder Indraj, announced this initiative on October 12 during the Annual General Meeting of the Delhi Citizen Cooperative Bank.
Indraj described the ride-hailing service as part of the Delhi government’s wider effort to “revitalise the cooperative movement in the city with new direction and energy.”
Notably, this ride-hailing service will operate through a dedicated mobile application that directly connects passengers with drivers.
Furthermore, drivers will own and manage this platform themselves, in stark contrast to conventional corporate-run ride-hailing firms.
Delhi’s Ride-Hailing Service Modelled On The Sahkar Taxi Initiative
Importantly, this initiative by the Delhi government draws inspiration from the Sahkar Taxi cooperative, currently in development in Maharashtra and other Indian states, a concept championed by the Union Ministry of Cooperation.
For context, in March this year, Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah (who is also the Union Home Minister) announced that the government would launch a cooperative-run ride-hailing service modelled after Uber and Ola, called the ‘Sahkar’ taxi.
Shah mentioned that this cooperative taxi service would include the registration of two-wheelers, taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheelers under a single umbrella.
Notably, drivers would share the profits equitably among themselves, thus bypassing corporate intermediaries.
However, in Delhi, this ride-hailing service will be tailored to suit the specific needs and commuting patterns of the metropolitan city, Indraj said while speaking to the Times of India.
Passengers can benefit from this cooperative-run ride-hailing service in Delhi through reliable service, transparent fares, and no unexpected price surges, all of which the Delhi government promises to deliver.
“This approach aims for a win-win scenario where drivers enjoy social security benefits and fair profit-sharing, while commuters get affordable rides,” a government official said about this initiative.
Speaking about the benefits that drivers stand to gain, the official remarked: “The main objective is to uplift [drivers] by improving their income, working conditions, and overall quality of life. By making drivers active members and stakeholders, the government hopes to build a sustainable model that benefits both drivers and consumers alike.”
