In August this year, the Indian government notified the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Law, 2025. With this law in place, online real money games are no longer permitted in India.

In fact, the law actively restricts financial service providers from processing payments for such games and advertisements for them as well. This development has shaken up the entire real money gaming sector, with companies either pivoting to alternative revenue streams or moving to various courts in the country to challenge the law.

To discuss the scope and impact of this law, MediaNama invites you to attend a discussion on “Navigating India’s Online Gaming Law”.

As the industry grapples with this development and courts begin debating it as well, there are a lot of questions that need a closer look, especially the constitutionality of the law. For instance, can the government disregard established differences between game of skill and game of chance to create the ‘online money games’ category under the bill? Is the government treating in-person money games and online money games differently through such a ban? There are also questions about the status of transactional activities within other types of games. For instance, what happens to loot boxes that mimic gambling mechanics within regular video games? And what about instances where a user may sell their entire account within a game on a third-party platform?
