WhatsApp has begun letting users reserve usernames ahead of the feature’s wider rollout later this year, allowing people to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. The reservation process started this week and is available through the latest version of the app, although the feature will roll out gradually by country. Users can reserve a username by navigating to Settings > Account > Username. 

Once enabled, people messaging a user or business for the first time will see the username instead of the phone number. Additionally, WhatsApp will not maintain a searchable username directory or provide username suggestions, meaning others must know a user’s exact username to initiate contact. 

Users can also enable an optional username key for an additional verification step. Meanwhile, creators, businesses and organisations can reserve their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames. Other users can use a built-in username generator if their preferred name is unavailable. 

Why does this matter? WhatsApp’s move comes at a time when the Indian government has increasingly pushed messaging platforms towards stronger identity verification and traceability to curb cyber fraud. Earlier this year, the government mandated SIM binding for messaging apps, arguing that linking accounts to verified mobile numbers would make it harder for fraudsters to exploit disposable numbers and anonymous accounts. 

At the same time, the government recently criticised Telegram’s privacy architecture during court proceedings over its temporary ban, arguing that its anonymity-enhancing features made it harder to identify and investigate offenders. 

Although WhatsApp accounts will remain linked to verified phone numbers internally, displaying usernames instead of phone numbers could make it easier for bad actors to impersonate individuals or businesses with deceptive handles if users rely solely on display names.
