Mobile internet services were disrupted in parts of central Delhi as large crowds gathered at Jantar Mantar for a protest, according to several posts on X. MediaNama’s reporter Prabhanu Kumar Das confirmed the internet shutdown through the individuals who were present at the protest site. They said that the internet shutdown was active at least since 10:30 am.
Aroon Deep (@AroonDeep), posting from the location, said that mobile internet is shut down at the protest site.
Another user posted “Internet is not working at the jantar mantar and surrounding areas.” In a follow-up post, Deep said he was only able to send updates through a nearby Jio Wi-Fi hotspot with a limited 34MB of data. Read The Hindu’s brief post on X based on Deep’s reporting here.
CJP_for_India (@CJP_for_India) posted that some mobile users in the Jantar Mantar area had received a message about the internet shutdown, adding that the message read: “As per government instructions, internet services had been stopped in the area until further notice. REGINF.”
A screenshot posted by @amock202, showing a notification from an Airtel sender ID, similarly read that “the internet services have been temporarily stopped in your area,” as per instructions attributed to the government, with the message repeated in the notification.
The Wire reported that signal jammers had disrupted mobile networks at Jantar Mantar, forcing many to walk nearly 2 km away from the protest site to access the internet or to make calls.
